#431 Hello! Let's get these forums going!!

Posted by Gord Rufh on 27 March 2014 - 11:03 PM

Hi everyone, my name is Gord Rufh. I have worked at the local newspaper in my town for 31 years. I don't shoot for the newspaper, I work in the post production department as the Department Supervisor I have had a love of photography since I was 10 years old. My father had an old Mamiya 35mm that I used until I saved for my first 35mm. A Canon AE-1. From there I have been taking photos ever since. I grew up in the era of film. I had my own darkroom and developed my own black & white and colour. What a headache colour was to do. I made the switch to digital in 2000 while reading a review on the Canon G1 my first digital a 3.1 mega pixel. I am now a Nikon user, shooting with a D610. I am married to my wife Genny with 3 children, Stephanie 23, Lauren 7 and Michael 5.

#42 Mid-Day HDR

Posted by jpeg2RAW - Mike on 13 August 2011 - 08:14 PM

You are always hearing about the "magic hour" or "blue hour" as having the best light for photography and that mid-day sunlight really isn't that well suited for things like landscapes.  Of course the morning and evening sunlight is really nice and my favorite time to shoot, but that doesn't mean I am only going to take photos during those time.  If you do it right, quality images can be obtained even in the middle of the day.

Below is a photo from my phone showing my camera and tripod setup and ready to take a few photos.  Yep, looks like a normal mid-day shot which supports the reason why you don't shot landscape in the middle of the day.  But what do you expect from a camera on a phone.

Below are two images that show it is possible to get food landscape photos in the middle of the day, assuming you set them up properly and add some post processing.  By now, we hopefully all know images from a DSLR require some post processing, right?

#392 Hello! Let's get these forums going!!

Posted by proudirishman3304 on 28 January 2014 - 05:24 PM

Trying to do my best to help out and get the forums picking up in traffic!

My name is Stephen Miller I am 25 years old. I work full time as a pharmacy tech and have the afternoons off to shoot and work on building my photography business. I run a full business on my own as well as working quite a handful of assignments for 3 sister publications. I just shot the February 2014 cover and am awaiting for it's release. I've only been shooting a year maybe a little bit more. I love photography and often look to that or the gym, for a stress reliever. I am always looking to learn and will consistently ask questions about what is effective in running a photography business. I listen to over 7 different podcasts religiously. From photography to social media marketing to branding and pricing. I want to know it, because I crave success in this industry. Like I said, I am a sponge for knowledge and am willing to learn from anyone. My greatest hurtle right now is learning what kind of photographer I am. I shoot family portraits mostly, but do well in any kind of portraiture. I also shoot product photography and landscapes. Any questions feels free to ask I'm an open book!

#3411 Wal-Mart using my image illegally?

Posted by jpeg2RAW - Mike on 07 June 2015 - 12:53 PM

Warning - Anti-climatic ending.

Yesterday, I finally got a chance to talk to the local Wal-Mart staff in the Photo Center about my photo.  Before I talked them I had wanted to talk with a lawyer to determine the best approach and then talk to the city to determine if they were the ones to give Wal-Mart the image.  Legal action proved to not the best option for me since the amount of damages I could have received were so limited since the image had not be registers with the Copyright Office.  I then talked to the City and determined they did not give the image to Wal-Mart.  They had only given the image to one group (a Non-Profit group that promotes various activities in the state).  I came to an agreement with the Non-Profit group and with the City, but still needed to talk with Wal-Mart.

I decided to approach this like I have the other steps on this matter, be nice and don't assume guilt before knowing all the facts.  This has always been hard for me in work and life as I tend to jump to conclusions and "attack" the situation.  When I walked into the Photo Center, the first thing I noticed was the photo was missing.  I immediately thought the City had "tipped off" Wal-Mart and now we would play the "what photo" game.  I continued my shopping and  came back a few minutes later.  When I walked in the Photo Center employee (Michael) asked if he could help me.  I then asked him what had happened to the image of Suwanee Town Center they had on display and he replied it had been destroyed.  I knew it, they were tipped off, I thought!  So I calmly asked why and he replied the customer who ordered the print never came to pick it up.  WHAT?  Yep, someone had ordered the print (they obviously would not give me the name) for some purpose and never returned to pick it up.  So in the end, this was some individual who stole the image and it is unlikely I will ever know who and at this point I consider the Wal-Mart part of this closed.

I ended up talking with the Photo Center staff for about 20 minutes.  Michael is a photographer and we talked about how I did the image (3 shot HDR), the podcast and various other photography topics.

#1144 Howdy from A.D.Wheeler (The abandonscape guy)

Posted by A.D.Wheeler on 27 August 2014 - 08:52 PM

Howdy!  Was awesome that Mike had me on the show. Cannot wait to do it again!  There was so much we didn't get to.

I am the creator of "abandonscape" photography...as far as I know.  I also do my fair share of landscape and conceptual portraiture.  I started in 2008.  Went full time in 2013 and it has been nothing but a rocket ride of fun since.  I love and appreciate art in all forms.  I am currently a master at Trey Ratcliff and Pete Giordano's TheArcanum.com and currently have 21 apprentices.  I show/sell limited editions of my Abandonscape art on metal at art festivals up and down the east coast.

I was going to list my links here but if you just go to these two you should be all set:

I hope to be a regular contributor here.  My plate is pretty full but I will do my best to answer any questions, either technical or otherwise.  Thanks to Mike and the others for inviting me into this awesome community!

#90 A new favorite

Posted by jpeg2RAW - Mike on 27 February 2012 - 11:58 PM

While this one still has some issues I need to clean up, it's one of my favorite now.  Photo was taken toward the end of the Golden Hour in George Pierce Park.  You can still see a little of the fog on the water.

From what Tim was saying on last night's show, it does seem pretty limited.  Still if you are a CC member, the app is free so if I had an iPad, I would download it.

It's definitely downloaded but man I hope they push out some upgrades quickly :(
